“People are difficult to govern because they have too much knowledge.” Lao TzuIt is not incorrect on the point that people have knowledge, and that people are hard to govern. It is however, incorrect to say that people are hard to govern because of their overwhelming knowledge, which they lack in the first place. Knowledge is defined as the acquaintance with facts and truths gained by experience, sight or report. Einstein once said "Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe." With the advancement of media came that of propaganda by elites, even manipulation of the government. Through the media, although news can reach the general public instantly, but can also be withheld by those in control, or even have false information injected. News of key events, such as riots, crises and even nation news like government spending are withheld from many. With respect to the 2011 London riots, doctored images of London trademarks burning were spread on popular photo-sharing website, Tumblr. This has caused unnecessary unrest as viewers had not verified the legibility of the image. Perhaps as people are more interlinked with one another, we let our guards down and place too much trust in everything. Another example would be Food Inc., a documentary about the origins of commercially sold food, the breeding/culturing process (if applicable) and manufacturing process. Many products, even by high-end producers, had been found to lack hygiene during production, or contained ingredients not stated on the product packaging. Consumers had not the knowledge of whether the cow which they bought the meat of had been hygienically bred or genetically modified, or whether their children had consumed powdered milk containing harmful chemical (eg. Melamine) or were subjected to high radiation. Many flew into frenzies during the melamine outbreak, panicking though they knew little of what melamine does and the amounts that certain products contained, all they knew was that melamine was in their food and melamine was bad. Had they known the safe levels, characteristics and alternatives, the situation would be handled better. With elites running the governments, and the government governing us, it is no wonder that in recent times the minds of civilians are easily altered to the elites’ wishes. Research has shown that in America, students in college or below are learning less than those 100 years ago. Yet many citizens are not concerned as they place too much trust that the government would take excellent care of them. The lack of proper/important education (especially moral education) has caused the decrease in the young generation’s moral values, resulting in higher crime rates globally in youths. With influence from western culture, youths are encouraged to be rebellious and think for themselves. I agree with the latter, however instead of thinking for themselves, which they are handicapped as they lack the experience and maturity to do so, hence their thoughts would be contaminated with media and society negativity, for example, the ‘coolness’ of smoking and losing their virginity early without thought for their futures. Visual media has been successful in promoting violence and other negative values (such as unrestrained sexual desires, greed, power lust etc) from children to adults. This results in desensitization to violence and cruelty, therefore the lack of sympathy and concern, which would ultimately loosen the bonds between fellow humans. And many do not have the knowledge and principles to eschew themselves from this; instead, they submit and embrace this. .
From a young age, the amount of knowledge a person is “allowed” has been increasingly controlled and limited. I believe this agrees with the question. In conclusion, instead of being easier to be governed, people with the lack of knowledge are harder to govern as they thus lack good judgement and maturity, which leads to misunderstandings. Without foresight of the consequences, violent outbreaks/riots might occur, which could have been resolved through diplomatic/mediated negotiations should the parties have more knowledge about their situation/disagreement (causes, consequences and possible solutions). --------------------------------------------- Pardon it was a rushed essay as I didnt wanted to delay it anymore.
